Your Embed PDF Questions, Answered

All the answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch with us and we’ll help you sort it out.

  • Why would I embed a PDF in my webpage?

Think about all of the info you frequently find in PDFs. Educational resources, business reports, product catalogs, legal and healthcare forms, digital restaurant menus, event schedules, technical manuals, and so much more. If you host or share any of these things, the common practice is to share a link so people can click to download or open your PDF in another window. With the Smallpdf PDF Embed viewer, you can do away with the clicks and embed any PDF document directly in a webpage. For your user, customer, client, or visitor, they can conveniently view your PDF without clicking away. And for you, there’s no third-party apps or tricky installs to make it happen. In short, we’re making it easy to give your users a better document experience.

  • Can I embed a PDF that’s hosted on my server?

Absolutely. You can embed any PDF that has a direct URL to it. The PDF can be hosted on your server, your CMS, or any hosting service where the PDF is accessible through a direct link.

  • Can I embed several PDFs on the same page?

Yes, multiple PDFs can be embedded throughout the same page. To do so, simply add the embed code on your webpage where you want the PDFs to appear. You can paste the embed code directly into your page’s source code, or you can use any compatible short code or native embed block functionality permitted by your CMS. You can use the same code to embed the same PDF multiple times, or you can embed different PDFs by generating a unique embed code for each PDF using the box at the top of this page.

  • Can I embed PDFs that are saved on Smallpdf's cloud storage?

Not yet. But this is coming soon through the sharing feature. If you’re subscribed to our newsletter, we’ll let you know as soon as it’s available. Or check back here for the latest updates.

  • Are PDFs displayed with Smallpdf's Embed PDF viewer private?

Smallpdf team members do not have access to your personal files. Keep in mind, however, that any PDF you embed on your site is visible to anyone who has access to your webpage. If you want to embed a PDF that is only visible to certain people, you’ll need to use your website’s privacy features (e.g. by requiring a password for visitors to view a specific page).

  • Is it free?

100%. It’s completely free to use the Smallpdf Embed PDF viewer. No account signup or subscription is required to generate a unique PDF embed code to use on your website for native PDF viewing. Sound crazy? We’ll say it again. Yes, it’s free.
