Create PDFs With Built-In Tools on Windows and Mac
Your computer already has a neat little trick for turning files into PDFs.
On Windows, open your file and go to File > Print, then choose Microsoft Print to PDF as your printer. You’re not actually printing, it just saves your file as a PDF. Name it, pick where it goes, done. This works for most files, as long as you can open it.
On a Mac, it’s just as easy. Open the file, hit File > Print, then pick Save as PDF from the dropdown menu. You can also use Preview: open the file, go to File > Export as PDF, and save it from there.
How To Create a PDF on Mobile
If you’re out and about without your laptop, you can still create PDFs from your phone in a couple of taps.
On iPhone or iPad, open your file and tap the Share icon. Choose Print, then zoom out on the preview with two fingers. That opens a PDF version. Tap Share again and select Save to Files. Edit the name, and you’re done!
On Android, open the Google Drive app and tap the + icon, then pick Scan to snap a pic and save it as a PDF. You can also use the Print option in apps like Chrome or Docs and just switch to the Save as PDF virtual printer.
Convert Multiple Files to PDFs at Once
If you’ve got a bunch of files you need converted to PDF, no problem.
Drop a mix of Word docs, PowerPoints, images, or whatever you have into the PDF Creator. Each one gets turned into its own PDF, ready to download.
If you're using the free version, you can only go one at a time. But with a Pro account, you can convert a whole stack in one go and download everything together in a neat little ZIP file. Fast, easy, and fully encrypted. Sign up for a 7-day free trial, and you get full access to all Pro features during your trial.
Formats You Can Create PDFs From
Here’s what you can turn into a PDF with just a few clicks:
- Word documents (.doc, .docx)
- Excel files (.xls, .xlsx)
- PowerPoint presentations (.ppt, .pptx)
- Images (.jpg, .png, .tiff, .bmp, .gif, .webp)
- Text files (.txt)
When batch creating PDFs, you can also mix the file types. That means you can drag and drop a mix of Word, JPG, and PPT files into the tool and convert them simultaneously to individual PDF files. There’s no limit on the number of documents that can be converted to PDF format. When using the batch processing mode, you can download all files in a collective ZIP file on the result page.
Want to combine them all into one file once you’re done converting? Just head over to Merge PDF and we’ll sort it out for you.
Make Your PDF Editable, Searchable, or Smaller
So, you've created your PDF; what’s next?
You can open it in our Edit PDF tool to add comments, highlight stuff, or type new text right on the page. If you scanned a file and want to make it a searchable and editable PDF, we’ve got you covered with OCR (that’s a Pro feature, but totally worth it if you work with scans a lot).
And if your PDF turns out a bit chunky? Use Compress PDF to slim it down without wrecking the quality. This is super useful for email attachments or uploads with size limits.
Here’s a Simple Workaround When You Need a Blank PDF
We’re not going to ask why you need this, just open a blank doc in Word or Google Docs, then either Save as PDF or use your system’s Print > Save as PDF option. Once that’s done, you can open it in our Edit PDF tool and add whatever you need—text, drawings, shapes, or even your signature.
FAQs About Creating PDFs
Why is my PDF so big after export?
Big images, fonts, or detailed layouts can sometimes make your file size balloon. If it’s too large to email or upload, just run it through our Compress PDF tool. It’ll shrink it down without making it look awful.
Can I rearrange or delete pages in a PDF I just created?
Absolutely. Head over to the Organize PDF tool to move things around, delete extra pages, or rotate them. It’s super quick and works right in your browser.
Can I create a PDF from a webpage?
Yep. Just hit Print in your browser and select Save as PDF—easy. Just remember you have no control over where the page break will go, so the PDF might not look great.
Why Use PDF Anyway?
Not sure why PDFs are still such a thing? They work everywhere, keep your formatting intact, and make sharing a breeze. Whether you’re sending homework, a contract, or a recipe, a PDF makes sure it arrives exactly how you meant it to.
And with Smallpdf, turning pretty much anything into a PDF is as easy as drag, drop, done.
