Follow our guide to type the shrug emoji ¯_(ツ)_/¯ without copy and paste every time, for Mac, PC, iPhones, or Android.

Before emojis were a thing, we had emoticons. The shrug emoticon, in particular - ¯_(ツ)_/¯, emoted a variety of sentiments, depending on the context. Whether you feel melancholic, slightly aggravated, apathetic, or simply baffled, it covers it all. And for those who wish to continue reliving the golden age that is the early 2000s, here is how you can always type out the shrug emoji by using text replacement instead of having to copy and paste or write out all 11 characters, every single time.

How to type the shrug emoji on a Mac or iPhone

  1. Start by copying the emoji ¯_(ツ)_/¯.

  2. Open up System Preferences and choose ‘Keyboard’.

  3. Select the ‘Text’ tab and click the ‘+’ arrow.

  4. Choose an abbreviation to be replaced with the shrug emoji, i.e., ‘&shrug’.

  5. Hit enter, and you’re good to go.

By doing so, whenever you typed out the specified text, the shrug emoji will be displayed instead. If you are on an iPhone, you’d have to go to Settings and General instead of System Preferences. Otherwise, the method of adding text replacement for the shrug emoji is essentially the same.

How do I type the shrug emoji for Android

Surprisingly, this is also very similar to how you would type it out via an Apple device.

You still copy the emoji, go to Settings, but instead, switch to Language & Input, Languages, and then there will be an option for you to add a shortcut for ¯_(ツ)_/¯. And lastly, if you are wondering how one can type out this lovely emoticon - you can’t. But on the bright side, you could also save it onto a sticky note onto your desktop, if that’s not too tedious. We shall update you as soon as we find a solution, as we are also keen on doing so on Windows machines.

And lastly, if you’re still here, why not check out all the cool tools that you can use to add the shrug emoji onto digital documents. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
