Once you generate an online signature, the output’s format should be dependent on your needs.

If you intend to sign many documents, JPG is the way to go; you can drag and drop an image onto almost any text editor, e.g., Word, Google Docs, TextEdit.

In case you want to embed your personal signature to your email, you should go for the JPG option. Most email clients should allow the chance for you to edit your email signature via their settings page.

On the other hand, if you need to store the signature or share it as part of a signature request, you should save it in PDF format. Of course, you can also opt for both—the tools are free to use!

If you have a contract or form in a different format, e.g., Word documents, you can first convert it to PDF with our all-in-one PDF Converter, and then use our signature maker to sign the file.

When you create a free signature or sign a PDF with our online signature tool as a free user—we use standard electronic signatures for these cases.

If you are looking to create a legally binding digital signature—consider getting a Pro subscription of Smallpdf, which should enable digital sealing. We have also written a guide on how we create digital signatures if you're keen to learn more about this service.
