Signing Document App Tutorial

How to sign a document using our eSign tool!

While your document is open in our signing app, you can also click “Invite signees” to request a signature from another party or even multiple persons. When you do so, we’ll notify you via email when the recipient signs the document.

Of course, you can directly request signatures from others without signing yourself. Suppose you want copies of the same document signed by multiple parties. In that case, all you have to do is invite signees individually by repeating the process described above for each signee. If you were to add the signees all at once from within the open document in eSign, all invited parties would be signing the same document, resulting in a very confusing file.

Smallpdf’s eSign service accepts a wide variety of formats. When you drag and drop your file into eSign, we’ll convert it to PDF first, as this is the most secure format for signing documents. If you want to return the document’s final version to its original format, just download the PDF from eSign, head over to our PDF converter, and drag the signed PDF into the tool. Then, you can choose the file type you’d like to export the signed document as.

Can the Other Party Sign for Free?

Yes. When you request a signature from someone, they’ll get an email asking them to place their signature. All they have to do is click on the link in the email, and they’ll be sent directly to the document within eSign. They won’t need to have an account to access our electronic signing app.

The electronic signature app is free to use for a limited number of signatures per day. If you’ve used up your free usage, we offer premium plans to unlock unlimited access to our eSign tool, as well as many other PDF tools. If you’re unsure or only need more usage this once, you can opt for a Smallpdf Pro 7-day free trial. Within this timeframe, you can sign an unlimited number of documents per day and gain access to a wide variety of advanced features for all our tools. Check out our tools page to get an overview of Smallpdf’s functionalities.

Are the Signatures Legally Binding?

If you’re using our document signing app for free, a simple electronic signature will be generated. It’s essentially an image of what your signature looks like. Whether this is enough for your purposes and legally binding depends on where you live and work.

On the other hand, a digital signature has an added layer of encryption, making it more likely to be legally binding. Again, whether digital signatures are legally binding depends on your local laws. eSign also offers digital signatures; you’ll need a Smallpdf Pro account—or a free trial—to benefit from this feature, though. This type of signature created with eSign will contain a trail for you to track the creation date and time, as well as the name of the person signing—this will be Smallpdf, as we are signing on behalf of the signee.

To ensure that the signing experience is as smooth as possible, you can use our online eSign tool on any device, whether your computer, laptop, or handheld mobile device. We also have a mobile app so you can sign contracts on the go!
