Why PDFs Win as Lead Magnets

New Smallpdf research reveals why downloadable PDFs still capture leads, build trust, and drive sales in the AI search era.

As the company behind the PDF tools professionals use to create, convert, and share documents every day, Smallpdf wanted to know whether the PDF still earns its place in the modern funnel. So we surveyed 660 creator-led businesses (including marketers, creators, consultants, and course sellers) about their lead magnets, conversion strategies, and how PDFs stack up against video, social media, and AI search tools.

Key takeaways

  • 64% of creator-led businesses say a downloadable PDF is the single format people are most willing to trade an email address for.

  • Heading into 2027, 82% of creator-led businesses plan to invest the same or more in PDF and document-based content.

  • 45% say gated PDFs (those requiring an email to download) are now one of the few conversion assets AI search tools can't give away for free, and 60% already receive AI-tool referrals to their gated downloads.

  • 46% of creator-led businesses say a simple PDF regularly out-converts content that costs significantly more to produce.

  • 66% attribute real revenue directly to PDF assets in the past year, and nearly 1 in 5 (18%) credit one PDF with more than $10,000.

  • 54% say a PDF played a bigger role in closing a lead, client, or sale than they expected.

Why Downloadable PDFs Remain a Core Marketing Asset

Successful lead generation often depends on offering something genuinely useful. Downloadable PDFs continue to provide practical value while fitting naturally into modern digital marketing strategies.

More than half of creator-led businesses (51%) said downloadable PDFs were a core or regular part of nearly all their marketing funnels. Almost half (48%) also considered a downloadable PDF their single most relied-upon lead magnet, reinforcing the format's ongoing importance.

Confidence in document-based content remained strong looking ahead. Heading into 2027, 82% of creator-led businesses said they plan to invest the same amount or even more in PDFs and other document-based resources, suggesting they view these assets as long-term investments rather than temporary tactics.

Not every downloadable resource performed equally. Templates stood out as the strongest-performing format, with 31% saying they convert better than any other type of PDF.

Why PDFs Continue to Earn Trust in the AI Search Era

As search habits change, businesses need resources that provide lasting value beyond a quick answer. Downloadable PDFs offer a deeper experience while helping brands build meaningful relationships with potential customers.

Prospects are most willing to exchange an email for a downloadable PDF over other content formats.

Nearly two-thirds of creator-led businesses (64%) said downloadable PDFs were the format people were most willing to exchange an email address for. Rather than replacing lead magnets, AI-powered discovery appears to be creating new opportunities for users to find valuable downloadable resources.

Many respondents also believe PDFs have an important advantage. Almost half (45%) said gated PDFs are one of the few conversion assets AI search tools can't simply give away for free, while 60% reported already receiving referrals from AI tools to their gated downloads.

Downloadable PDFs are seen as more credible than several common content formats, including web pages, emails, and social media posts.

Downloadable documents proved especially valuable during the consideration stage. Almost one-third (32%) said PDFs performed best in the middle of the marketing funnel, where they helped educate prospects, nurture relationships, and build trust before a purchase decision.

Simple Documents Deliver Meaningful Business Results

Creating effective marketing assets doesn't always require large production budgets. Many businesses found that straightforward downloadable resources consistently generated measurable outcomes.

Two-thirds of creator-led businesses (66%) attributed real revenue to PDF assets during the past year. Among those respondents, nearly 1 in 5 (18%) credited a single downloadable PDF with generating more than $10,000 in revenue.

Many respondents also discovered that simple documents delivered stronger performance than expected. More than half (54%) said a PDF played a bigger role in closing a lead, client, or sale than they anticipated, while 46% reported that a simple PDF regularly out-converted content that cost significantly more to produce.

These findings suggest that practical, well-designed documents continue to offer an efficient way to generate business results without requiring extensive production resources.

The Enduring Value of Downloadable Content

AI tools can surface an answer in seconds, but speed isn't the same as trust. A well-made PDF is still something a person chooses to download, keep, and come back to. PDFs remain a trusted way to educate audiences, capture leads, and support conversions. Rather than becoming obsolete, document-based content has continued to fill an important role throughout the customer journey.

For creator-led businesses, investing in useful downloadable resources offers both immediate marketing value and long-term business potential. As technology evolves, the brands that pair accessible information with high-value resources may be best positioned to earn lasting trust.

Methodology

We surveyed 660 creator-led businesses (marketers, creators, consultants, and course sellers) about how they use downloadable PDFs as lead magnets and conversion assets, which formats convert best, and how those assets hold up against video, social media, and AI search tools. The sample spanned generations, including millennials (51%), Gen X (23%), Gen Z (22%), and baby boomers (4%), and skewed slightly female, with women (55%) and men (42%). Methodology percentages not totaling 100% are due to rounding or to respondents selecting more than one option. The data was collected in July 2026.
